The most likely Emission Control System to fail on diesel vehicles is the EGR valve. A faulty EGR valve can cause a host of unwanted symptoms such as illuminated warning lights and poor performance.

An EGR valve forms part of your vehicles intake system and it regulates the flow of exhaust gases to the engine intake system, resulting in increased engine efficiency, reduced fuel consumption and lower nitrogen oxide pollutant emissions.

It connects the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold and is controlled by either a vacuum or a built-in electric step motor.

The problem with the EGR valve is that it tends to get clogged up with carbon build up over time and this can cause all sorts of problems for your engine!
